New Airline Tax to Aid Developing World
Monday, September 21st, 2009
Time Magazine reports a new optional airline tax will soon be unveiled as a means of funding growth in the developing world:
Starting next January, whenever you buy an airline ticket at a travel agency or online, there’ll be a new question to answer before you hand over your credit card: Would you be willing to donate $2 to help fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in Africa?
It sounds like a small step, and many airline travelers, already irritated by compulsory surcharges for fuel, baggage and wider seats, may simply ignore it. But behind this call for a voluntary contribution is an unprecedented worldwide effort to make up a shortfall in official government aid to poor countries — a shortfall exacerbated by the world financial crisis.
The scheme, the idea of a small U.N. agency, is backed by the travel industry and heavyweights of international aid such as the William J. Clinton Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It will be formally announced in New York City on Sept. 23 on the fringes of the U.N. General Assembly, and accompanied by a marketing blitz. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the head of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, are expected to participate in the launch, as well as the chief executives of the three companies that have made it technically possible: Amadeus, Sabre and Travelport/Galileo, who run the reservation and ticketing systems for most of the world’s airlines. Barring any last-minute technical or legal hitches, the scheme will roll out in late January in the U.S. and several European countries, including Britain, Germany, Spain and Switzerland.

SAA Launches Mobile Application for Travel Info
Monday, August 24th, 2009
South African Airways has launched a new mobile application allowing passengers access to a wealth of useful information from their mobile devices. From the official press release:
Johannesburg. 5 August 2009. South African Airways (SAA) customers can now access comprehensive travel and airline information from just one point of reference, anywhere, anytime, using their cell phone.
The mobile portal, recently launched by SAA, allows travellers to access the following information from a capable cell phone device: airline flight schedules; directions to airline lounges at airports around the world; flight arrival and departure information; and destination information such as weather forecasts for any city in the world and a currency converter.
The new initiative is in partnership with Star Alliance, the international airline network to which SAA belongs. Star Alliance developed the Common IT Mobile Platform, which SAA used to launch its very own portal for customers. SAA is the first airline in Africa to have launched the new service.
The portal is a universal feed able to access information on any airline and destination in the world.
“It’s a single source of information for the traveller. Forget about making unnecessary phone calls or logging on to countless websites to get the information you need while you are on the go. Anywhere, anytime, information about your travels it at your finger tips,” says Mike Re, SAA Chief Information Officer.
Airline customers can also access World Tracer information, which tracks requests made about baggage, through the mobile portal. “This tool allows you track where your baggage request is with an airline and how close it is in the process to being resolved,” says Re.
The portal is accessible by logging on to http://mobile.flysaa.com or http://m.flysaa.com.

Delta Reduces Scope of New Baggage Fee
Friday, May 29th, 2009
ATLANTA — Delta Air Lines Inc., the world’s largest airline operator, said Wednesday it is significantly scaling back its plans for a $50 fee for a second checked bag on international flights, as some major competitors so far have refused to match it.
The Atlanta-based airline said the fee will only apply to travel between the U.S. and Europe. When Delta made the initial announcement April 21, the fee was to apply to all international travel.
“We constantly monitor the industry landscape to ensure our fares and fees are competitive,” spokeswoman Betsy Talton said in an e-mail.
Delta has said previously the new fee was expected to generate more than $100 million annually for the airline. It did not provide a new figure Wednesday.
The fee is effective for travel beginning July 1. The first checked bag on all Delta international flights remains free.
